![]() I would have liked more inventiveness in this department but since they fly at a million miles an hour you don’t really stop to notice what you’re actually doing.ĭoing them is fun though, which is probably the most important thing, right? You collect over the top weapons, or steal vehicles and completely annihilate things in your path. What’s sad about the missions though, is that they are basically fetch quests. Personally I enjoyed doing a bit of both as, even though there are 60-odd main missions to do, many of them can fly passed and you’ll be done with the main story in just a handful of hours. You can choose whether to head to the location of the main story mission which asks to to find parts of a time machine, or maybe you can dabble in some side missions, you have total freedom in that regard. The game takes place in the open world city of Theftropolis from, mostly, a top down perspective similar to the original Grand Theft Auto games. Everything happens so quick fire that it’s incredibly difficult to follow and I’m positive that much of the humour passed me by, but there’s so much of it you’ll definitely get a laugh every now and again. The reference per second counter is off the scale, especially early on where the story is so nonsensical that, although you’re not particularly engrossed by it, you still want to see what ridiculous thing happens next. It ascends beyond gameplay and becomes a pastiche, a love letter to action movies and 80’s pop culture. If you’re unfamiliar with, what is now quite a famous indie game, Retro City Rampage is an open world action game with an 8-Bit style, originally beginning life as retro de-make of GTA3, it eventually morphed into its own game. Here’s a review of the ever-popular game from VBlank Entertainment. Retro City Rampage has been out a while, originally released on my birthday in 2012, five years later it’s arrived on the Nintendo Switch.
